Norman McLaren Young, known as "Mac", was born in Coolgardie and later moved to Victoria with his family. He served as Sergeant in the first Australian Imperial Force in World War I, where he was a signaller in the 13th and 14th Battalions. In World War II he served as Major as a signals instructor in Victoria, Northern Territory and New Guinea. After the war he studied and became a chartered accountant.
